Why Houston, Texas

  • Texas has an incarceration rate of 891 per 100,000 people (including prisons, jails, immigration detention, and juvenile justice facilities), meaning that it locks up a higher percentage of its people than many wealthy democracies do.

Girls

In a given year, more than 50,000 juveniles are arrested in Texas or referred to the juvenile probation system.

Impacted Women

  • Since 1980, the number of women in Texas’ jails has increased 986%, and the number of women in Texas’ prisons has increased 951%.
  • The number of women in Texas’ prisons has increased more than 12-fold, from 1,005 in 1978 to 12,834 in 2017.
  • The number of women in Texas’ jails has increased more than 16-fold, from 517 in 1970 to 8,752 in 2015.
  • In Texas, the number of women in jails awaiting trial – totaling around 6,300 – has grown 48% since 2011, compared to an increase of 11% for men.

Gun Violence

  • There were 3,683 gun-related deaths in Texas in 2019.
  • In 2018, 64% of all Texas suicides were by firearm.
  • In 2018, nearly 73% of veteran suicides in Texas were by firearm.
  • In 2018, 174 women in Texas were killed by a male intimate partner—59% of those murders were by firearm.
  • Women in Texas are 24% more likely to be murdered with a gun than women in other states.
  • In 2019, at least 32 Texan children ages 0-17 died in unintentional shootings.

Violence Against Women

  • 174 women were killed by a male intimate partner across 64 counties in Texas in 2018 (compared to 136 women killed by a male intimate partner in 2017).
  • Wives were the victim of domestic violence in 13.1% of all incidents.c violence.

Impact on Children

  • There are more than 200,000 people in Texas jails and prisons, and nearly half a million children in Texas who have experienced a parent getting locked up.
  • A May 2018 budget report revealed that more than 60 percent of the women in Texas prisons have at least one minor child, which comes with an annual taxpayer price tag of$30,960 for each child in the foster care system.
  • Thirty-two percent of men in prison have two or more children under 18 years old.
